Founded in 2006, Savannah Celtic Football Club (SCFC) has quickly established itself in the minds and hearts of the Savannah soccer community. Started by two ’likely lads’ from the UK, the premise of the club was to promote soccer locally to everyone, no matter of age, gender, race, ability or social demographic.
Working closely with the City of Savannah and Chatham County Parks and Rec Dept we help facilitate the local Fall and Spring soccer league. And through our Celtic in the Community Program we also work with many local schools and geniune non-profit organisations.
Despite there having been other avenues for soccer in Savannah, ’The Celtics’ have managed to achieve so much in such a short period of time. We have increased overall participation in soccer and started a league in conjunction with the City of Savannah for the previously neglected Highschool aged players. With the Celtic in the Community Program (the first of its kind in Savannah), we are able to work in conjunction with local schools and promote / expose ’the beautiful game’ to children who would ordinarily never see a soccer ball.
In the summer of 2007 Savannah Celtic F.C. worked with Glasgow Celtic F.C. (one of the world’s biggest soccer clubs) to hold the ’Glasgow Celtic F.C. Summer Camp’ at Daffin Park. The camp was a great success and was featured on local television networks. No professional soccer team has sent coaches to Savannah with such magnitude prior to this Camp and we are proud to announce that another of its kind will be back in the not too distant future. Thank you Coach Joe, Coach Ed, Coach Hugh and Coach Mark!
In Fall 2009 we launched the youth development program. This program will serve only to raise the standards of soccer and soccer coaching here in Savannah over the coming months and years.
Essentially, we will be providing Savannah soccer players every opportunity they deserve. From Early Goals to U19, from Recreational soccer to the full time, professionally run Select Program. Perhaps that is why, since the clubs inception back in 2006, the numbers of happy kids, coaches and volunteers wearing green has compounded!
Thank you to all those who have given up their time to help the ’Celtic Nation’ grow into the club it is today. We could never have done it without you.
GREEN AND PROUD!
